Cross-Platform Tracker Alert Unveiled

Apple and Google announced the joint rollout of a new feature aimed at alerting users across iOS and Android platforms about Bluetooth tracking devices. The initiative seeks to mitigate potential misuse of such devices and address concerns regarding user privacy and safety. The capability, named “Detecting Unwanted Location Trackers” (DULT), was proposed by the two tech giants a year ago and is now officially available on Android devices running version 6.0 and later, as well as iOS devices with iOS 17.5.

With DULT, users will receive alerts if an unidentified Bluetooth tracking device is detected, regardless of the platform it’s paired with. Android users will see a “Tracker traveling with you” alert, while iOS users will receive an “[Item] Found Moving With You” message. Both platforms offer options to view the tracker’s identifier, play a sound to locate it, and access instructions to disable it. This collaboration between Apple and Google marks an industry first and includes instructions and best practices for manufacturers willing to integrate unwanted tracking alert capabilities into their products.

The initiative comes in response to reports of Bluetooth trackers, such as AirTags, being misused for malicious purposes, including stalking and tracking victims without their consent. A class-action lawsuit filed against Apple alleged that AirTags have become a dangerous tool for stalkers. To address such concerns, researchers have proposed cryptographic schemes like multi-dealer secret sharing (MDSS), aimed at balancing privacy and safety in the offline finding ecosystem. Additionally, Apple has backported a security fix for a vulnerability in the RTKit operating system to older iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices, addressing active exploitation threats.

Overall, the collaboration between Apple and Google represents a significant step toward enhancing user safety and privacy in the face of emerging threats related to Bluetooth tracking devices. By providing users with real-time alerts and control options, the initiative empowers individuals to safeguard their personal information and mitigate potential risks associated with unwanted tracking activities. Furthermore, the backporting of security fixes underscores the companies’ commitment to addressing vulnerabilities and ensuring the security of their users across various devices and platforms.
