Critical Splunk Vulnerabilities Allow RCE

Splunk has recently released crucial patches to address multiple high-severity vulnerabilities in its Enterprise product, which could enable attackers to execute remote code on affected systems. These vulnerabilities impact various versions of Splunk Enterprise and the Splunk Cloud Platform, raising significant concerns for organizations relying on these tools for data analysis and security monitoring. The identification and timely mitigation of these vulnerabilities are critical, given the increasing number of cyber threats targeting security monitoring platforms.

Among the most critical flaws is CVE-2024-45733, which affects Splunk Enterprise for Windows versions below 9.2.3 and 9.1.6. This vulnerability allows low-privileged users, who do not hold admin or power roles, to perform remote code execution due to insecure session storage configurations. Rated as high severity with a CVSS score of 8.8, this flaw could have severe implications for organizations if exploited. Another notable vulnerability, CVE-2024-45731, enables unauthorized file writing to the Windows system root directory, potentially allowing the injection of malicious DLLs that could lead to further exploitation.

Additionally, CVE-2024-45732 presents another significant risk, affecting multiple versions of Splunk Enterprise and the Splunk Cloud Platform. This flaw permits low-privileged users to run searches as the “nobody” user in the SplunkDeploymentServerConfig app, potentially granting access to restricted data. In response to these vulnerabilities, Splunk has recommended users upgrade to the latest versions of its software as soon as possible. Users are advised to transition to Splunk Enterprise versions 9.3.1, 9.2.3, or 9.1.6 and ensure their Splunk Cloud Platform instances are updated to the latest patches.

For organizations unable to implement immediate updates, Splunk has outlined several mitigations, including disabling Splunk Web on affected systems and modifying access permissions to enhance security. The discovery of these vulnerabilities underscores the importance of promptly applying security updates, particularly for critical infrastructure and security monitoring tools like Splunk. Given the privileged access these platforms have to sensitive data and systems across organizations, timely updates are essential to safeguarding against potential exploitation. Organizations using affected Splunk products should prioritize reviewing security advisories and implementing necessary updates to protect their environments effectively.
