Craig Newmark Commits $100M to Combat Hacks

Craig Newmark, the founder of Craigslist, has announced a substantial commitment to enhancing U.S. cybersecurity, pledging $100 million to combat the rising threats from foreign governments. In an interview, Newmark emphasized the urgent need for stronger defenses against cyberattacks, particularly those targeting critical infrastructure. He plans to allocate half of the funds specifically to safeguard essential services like power grids, while the other half will be devoted to public education on cybersecurity hygiene, ensuring that individuals are equipped to protect themselves online.

Since entering philanthropy in 2015, Newmark has already donated over $400 million, with cybersecurity consistently ranking high on his list of priorities. He described the current cyber landscape as an “all-hands-on-deck” situation, highlighting the growing risks posed by bad actors. His commitment reflects a broader recognition of the importance of cybersecurity not only for individual users but also for the integrity of national infrastructure.

Newmark’s philanthropic philosophy is rooted in the Jewish principle of tikkun olam, or “repairing the world,” which he learned from his Sunday school teachers. This principle drives his desire to effect meaningful change and contribute positively to society. In addition to cybersecurity, he is passionate about supporting a free and independent press, illustrating his multifaceted approach to philanthropy.

As Newmark prepares to implement this significant funding, he aims to foster a safer digital environment for all Americans. His intention to give away his wealth during his lifetime underscores his dedication to these causes, positioning him as a pivotal figure in the fight against cyber threats and in the promotion of informed digital citizenship. With his latest pledge, Newmark not only reinforces the importance of cybersecurity but also inspires others in the tech community to take similar action.
