College Data Breach Exposes Sensitive Info

American International College (AIC), a private liberal arts college in Springfield, Massachusetts, discovered a data breach on December 3, 2023. An unauthorized actor accessed sensitive personal identifiable information in AIC’s systems between November 14 and December 3, 2023. The breach potentially exposed data such as names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, medical record numbers, and clinical information including diagnoses, lab results, medications, healthcare claims, and treatments. On May 8, 2024, AIC began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted and offering them protective services.

In response to the breach, AIC has engaged leading cybersecurity experts to conduct a thorough investigation and enhance security measures to prevent future incidents. The college is committed to protecting its community and has provided best practices for individuals to safeguard their information. AIC is also offering complimentary credit monitoring services to those whose Social Security numbers were exposed. This service includes continuous monitoring and alerts to help detect any unauthorized use of personal information.

Affected individuals are advised to remain vigilant by reviewing their financial statements and credit reports for any suspicious activity. AIC has established a toll-free response line to assist those with questions or concerns about the breach and the protective measures in place. Representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to provide support and guidance.

This incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity practices in educational institutions. AIC is taking all necessary steps to address the situation and ensure the security of its students, faculty, and staff. By working closely with cybersecurity experts and offering comprehensive support to those affected, AIC aims to restore confidence and maintain the trust of its community.
