Citrix XenServer Bug Lets Admins Crash Hosts

Citrix has issued a critical security bulletin regarding vulnerabilities found in XenServer and Citrix Hypervisor that pose a significant risk to system stability. The vulnerabilities, identified as CVE-2024-45817, CVE-2022-24805, and CVE-2022-24809, affect XenServer 8 and Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 CU1 LTSR. The primary concern revolves around CVE-2024-45817, which allows a malicious administrator of a guest virtual machine (VM) to crash or render the host system unresponsive, potentially disrupting services for all users relying on the affected infrastructure.

In addition to the main vulnerability, Citrix has reported two additional issues within XenServer 8 that could enable an attacker on the management network to crash or disrupt the XenServer host’s Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) service. This could result in compromised monitoring and management capabilities, further endangering the integrity of the entire virtualization environment. The potential for exploitation highlights the importance of timely patching and proactive security measures.

Citrix has responded to these vulnerabilities by releasing updates through both Early Access and Normal update channels for XenServer 8 users. For Citrix Hypervisor 8.2 CU1 LTSR users, a specific hotfix (XS82ECU1077) is now available for download. Citrix is actively communicating with customers and channel partners about these issues and strongly encourages all users to apply the necessary updates as a means of safeguarding their systems against potential attacks.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has also issued an alert regarding these vulnerabilities, stressing the importance of reviewing and implementing the latest security updates. Users of XenServer and Citrix Hypervisor are urged to follow Citrix’s guidance to ensure the security and stability of their environments. By taking swift action, organizations can mitigate the risks associated with these vulnerabilities and maintain the integrity of their virtual infrastructure.
