Chemonics International Suffers Data Breach

Chemonics International, Inc. has disclosed a security incident involving unauthorized access to certain user accounts, which began in May 2023 and was discovered in December 2023. The company became aware of suspicious activity related to some user accounts on December 15, 2023, and immediately implemented security measures, including resetting passwords and disabling affected accounts. Cybersecurity experts were engaged to investigate the incident, which continued through January 9, 2024, and involved unauthorized access and acquisition of personal information.

The investigation identified that the breach lasted for several months, and data review confirmed that personal information was impacted. The review process, conducted with the help of third-party eDiscovery experts, took time to complete, and by October 31, 2024, Chemonics was able to identify the individuals whose personal data was accessed. Although there is no indication that any data has been misused, the company has taken steps to bolster its security protocols, including enhancing multi-factor authentication, deploying additional endpoint monitoring, and blocking suspicious internet traffic.

To mitigate the potential impact on those affected, Chemonics is offering credit monitoring services and urging individuals to remain vigilant. The company has advised impacted individuals to review their account statements, monitor credit reports, and consider temporarily freezing their credit to prevent unauthorized activity. Additionally, Chemonics warned against phishing attempts where malicious actors may impersonate the company or reference the incident in an effort to exploit individuals.

Chemonics has expressed regret over the breach and assured the public that protecting personal information is a top priority. The company continues to work with law enforcement and external cybersecurity experts to prevent future incidents. Individuals seeking more information or assistance can contact Chemonics directly through a dedicated helpline, available Monday through Friday, during business hours.
