Central Carolina Insurance Agency Breached

Central Carolina Insurance Agency (CCIA), based in Salisbury, North Carolina, is facing scrutiny after a significant data breach was discovered earlier this year. The breach, which was first detected on March 20, 2024, may have compromised sensitive personal and protected health information of over 5,000 individuals. CCIA immediately took steps to address the incident, including disconnecting access to its network and hiring a specialized cybersecurity firm to investigate the breach. The agency also alerted the FBI to the situation on March 28, 2024, ensuring that law enforcement was involved early on.

Following an extensive forensic investigation, it was confirmed that an unauthorized third party gained access to CCIA’s systems between December 31, 2023, and March 20, 2024. During this period, various types of sensitive data, including Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, medical records, and financial account details, were potentially exposed. On November 13, 2024, CCIA completed its review of the affected data, which led to the identification of those whose information was compromised.

In response, CCIA has begun mailing notification letters to the affected individuals. These letters, which started being sent out on November 21, 2024, outline the specific types of data that may have been exposed. Additionally, the agency is offering complimentary credit monitoring services to the individuals affected by the breach, aiming to help mitigate the risks of identity theft and financial fraud. The company’s quick response highlights its commitment to protecting its customers’ information, but the breach underscores the growing importance of robust cybersecurity practices.

This breach serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of sensitive data and the potential consequences of cybersecurity failures. CCIA has stated that it is taking steps to strengthen its security protocols to prevent future incidents. As the investigation continues, the insurance agency is cooperating fully with law enforcement and regulatory bodies to ensure accountability and transparency. Affected individuals are encouraged to stay vigilant and take advantage of the offered services to safeguard their personal information.
