Leading snowboard manufacturer Burton Snowboards has confirmed a data breach that occurred during a “cyber incident” in February, resulting in potential access or theft of sensitive customer information.
The breach was discovered on February 11 when it caused a system outage and forced the company to cancel online orders. Burton has advised customers to visit physical stores or use their new online rental program for snowboarding gear purchases and has enlisted external forensic experts to determine the extent of the breach.
According to notification letters sent to affected customers, Burton stated that a limited number of files and folders were potentially accessed or taken by an unknown actor.
On April 7, 2023, it was confirmed that some customer information was present in the compromised files and folders. The exposed information may include names, Social Security numbers, and financial account details. However, Burton’s privacy policy assures that credit card information or bank account numbers are not stored or held by their website.
In response to the breach, Burton has taken steps to enhance security. Account passwords linked to affected customers have been reset, and the company is closely monitoring any potential misuse of customer personal information.
Burton has notified relevant state and federal regulators as required and reported the incident to law enforcement for investigation. Although there have been no reports of misuse so far, the company remains vigilant in ensuring the protection of its customers’ data.
Burton Snowboards, established in 1977, is a renowned snowboard brand with a global presence, selling its products in numerous stores worldwide.
