BCBST Security Breach Alert

BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee (BCBST) has recently disclosed two data security incidents affecting approximately 2,000 current and former members. The breaches, identified on December 19, 2023, and between January 18-24, 2024, involved suspicious log-in attempts to the online member portal. While BCBST’s security team swiftly responded by temporarily disabling the portal, enhancing password security, and engaging external experts, the compromised personal information, such as names, addresses, and medical details, could pose a risk for potential identity theft and fraud. BCBST is taking proactive steps by notifying affected members through letters and offering identity monitoring services at no cost. The company advises affected individuals to review their account statements, obtain free credit reports, and change online account passwords to bolster security.

Founded in 1945, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee is a not-for-profit health plan serving over 3.4 million members. Despite the recent data security challenges, the Chattanooga-based company has a long-standing history of providing peace of mind to its members for more than 75 years. BCBST is committed to addressing the concerns of the affected members by encouraging vigilance against identity theft and fraud. The company assures affected individuals that they can reach out for additional information or assistance through a dedicated helpline or email. With a focus on transparency and accountability, BCBST emphasizes the importance of safeguarding personal information, underlining its dedication to the well-being and security of its members.
