Bank of Cyprus Thwarts DDoS Cyber Attack

On October 21, 2024, the Bank of Cyprus reported a successful defense against a cyber-attack that aimed to disrupt its website operations. The incident occurred on the afternoon of October 20, when the bank’s online platforms were targeted in a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. This type of attack seeks to overwhelm a website with traffic, rendering it inaccessible to legitimate users. Fortunately, the bank’s cybersecurity measures effectively thwarted the attempt, allowing its websites to remain operational and accessible throughout the incident.

In a separate but related incident, Hermes Airport also experienced a failed cyber-attack targeting its website on the same day. Maria Kouroupi, the Aviation Development and Communications Director for Hermes, confirmed that their systems successfully countered the threat, ensuring that airport operations were not affected. She emphasized that the airport’s website is not linked to its critical operational systems, which further minimized any potential disruptions caused by the attack.

These recent cyber threats underscore the increasing challenges faced by organizations in safeguarding their digital infrastructures. As cyber-attacks become more sophisticated and frequent, institutions like the Bank of Cyprus and Hermes Airport must remain vigilant and proactive in their cybersecurity efforts. Both organizations have highlighted the importance of robust security measures and swift responses to potential threats to protect their services and users.

The successful thwarting of these cyber-attacks not only reflects the effectiveness of the cybersecurity protocols in place but also serves as a reminder of the ongoing risks in today’s digital landscape. As more institutions rely on online services, the need for enhanced cybersecurity practices will continue to grow, requiring constant vigilance and adaptation to emerging threats.
