AutoCanada, a major Canadian car dealership, recently disclosed a cyberattack affecting its internal IT systems. The attack, discovered on August 11, has led to disruptions in its operations, though the company continues to operate while addressing the issue.
AutoCanada has taken immediate action to safeguard its network and data by engaging cybersecurity experts for containment, remediation, and investigation. The ongoing investigation aims to determine the full scope and impact of the incident, including whether any customer, supplier, or employee data has been accessed. As of now, the extent of the breach remains unknown, but the company anticipates potential disruptions until the affected systems are fully restored.
AutoCanada has not provided further details, but the nature of the attack suggests it may be related to ransomware. On the same day as the cyberattack disclosure, AutoCanada also reported that its financial results for Q2 2024 were negatively impacted by a ransomware attack suffered by CDK Global. CDK Global, which provides software to numerous auto dealerships, was breached in June, forcing many dealerships to revert to manual operations temporarily.
The CDK Global incident also affected other car dealerships, including AutoNation, which reported lower earnings due to the breach. CDK Global reportedly paid a $25 million ransom to a BlackSuit ransomware affiliate, highlighting the significant financial and operational impact of the attack on the auto dealership industry.
