The initiative aligns with the global Christchurch Call, an effort to limit the spread of extremist content online, which was established following the 2019 Christchurch terrorist attack in New Zealand. The attack, which resulted in 51 deaths, was broadcast live on social media, raising international concerns about the role of the internet in promoting violent extremism. Australia’s participation in this global initiative further highlights its commitment to preventing the radicalization of individuals and protecting online spaces from exploitation by terrorist groups.
Minister for Home Affairs Tony Burke emphasized the importance of this new capability, stating that the Australian government takes its responsibility to protect citizens from online harm very seriously.
