Atlantic General Hospital has agreed to a $2.25 million settlement in a class action lawsuit over a data breach that occurred in January 2023. The lawsuit alleges that the hospital failed to implement adequate cybersecurity measures, which led to hackers accessing sensitive personal information of numerous individuals. The breach reportedly compromised data such as Social Security numbers, health insurance details, and financial account information.
The settlement is designed to benefit individuals who received a notification from Atlantic General about the breach. Class members are entitled to three years of free credit monitoring and insurance services as part of the settlement. Additionally, they can claim cash payments for documented data breach-related expenses, with reimbursements of up to $5,000 available. Those without documented losses can receive a pro-rata cash reward based on the remaining settlement funds.
Atlantic General has not admitted to any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve the lawsuit. The terms include compensation for affected individuals and measures to help protect against future identity theft. This settlement aims to address the harms caused by the breach and provide financial relief to those impacted.
The deadline for class members to exclude themselves from the settlement or file objections is July 23, 2024. This timeline ensures that affected individuals have the opportunity to participate in the settlement process or voice any concerns before it is finalized.
