IMI Hit by Cyberattack in Growing UK Wave

On December 18, 2024, American Plumbing & Heating (APH) discovered a security breach after certain files on its computer systems were locked by a computer virus. In response, the company took immediate steps to secure its network, recover its systems from backups, and determine the scope of the incident. During the review process, APH identified that certain files containing sensitive information, including individuals’ names and Social Security numbers, had been copied without authorization. The company worked quickly to compile a list of affected individuals and notify them, completing this task by January 16, 2025.

To support those impacted, APH is offering complimentary identity monitoring services, including Single Bureau Credit Monitoring, Single Bureau Credit Report, and Single Bureau Credit Score services.

These services will alert individuals to any changes in their credit files for up to 24 months, providing proactive monitoring and fraud assistance. APH has collaborated with Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, to provide these services and help individuals address any potential identity theft or fraud issues. APH also encouraged individuals to remain vigilant by monitoring their accounts and reviewing their credit reports regularly for any signs of suspicious activity.

The company has outlined additional steps that individuals can take to protect their personal information. These steps include placing a fraud alert or credit freeze on credit files, which can help prevent unauthorized credit or loans from being approved in the affected individual’s name. APH has provided detailed instructions on how to take these actions and is offering guidance on how to obtain free credit reports annually from the three major credit reporting bureaus. APH also recommends contacting the relevant authorities, such as the Federal Trade Commission, for further assistance with identity theft prevention and fraud resolution.

In addition to providing resources for affected individuals, APH is committed to improving its internal security measures. The company is reviewing its policies, procedures, staff training, and technical security protocols to reduce the likelihood of similar events occurring in the future. For individuals with questions or who need further assistance, APH has set up a dedicated toll-free support line and provided contact information for additional resources.
