AMA Reports Data Breach Impacting Employees

The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) recently disclosed a security event that may have affected personal information of some current and former employees. The incident was discovered on August 16, 2024, when AMA identified suspicious activity within its network. An investigation revealed that an unauthorized actor accessed and copied specific files containing sensitive information. The organization has notified those impacted and provided resources to protect against potential misuse of the compromised data.

The compromised information potentially includes names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and financial account details for certain employees. AMA clarified that this breach does not involve members’ Social Security numbers or financial data, as such information is not collected or stored by the organization. The files were reviewed to determine the scope of the breach and the individuals potentially impacted.

In response to the breach, AMA has taken various steps to bolster its cybersecurity infrastructure. The organization engaged forensic specialists to investigate the incident, reported the matter to federal law enforcement, and implemented new technical security measures to prevent future breaches. AMA has also enhanced its data privacy policies and continues to monitor its systems for suspicious activity.

AMA has reached out to affected individuals through direct communication, public postings, and media announcements. Those impacted are encouraged to monitor their accounts and credit reports for signs of fraud. For further inquiries, AMA has provided a dedicated hotline and mailing address for assistance.
