David Franklin Slater, a civilian employee of the U.S. Air Force, has been arrested and charged with transmitting highly classified military information on a dating app. Slater, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, held a Top Secret security clearance and worked at U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base until his arrest on March 2.
The indictment reveals that Slater used an unnamed foreign dating site to share sensitive information about the war in Ukraine with an unnamed woman. The messages exchanged indicate the woman’s clear intent to obtain classified details, posing a serious threat to national security. The U.S. Attorney for the District of Nebraska stated that individuals with access to Top Secret information have specific responsibilities, and the allegations against Slater raise concerns about whether he betrayed those responsibilities. Slater faces potential consequences, including up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a substantial fine for each count.
