Aiken Electric Notifies Customers of Breach

Aiken Electric Cooperative recently informed its customers about a data security incident that may have resulted in the unauthorized access of sensitive personal information. On September 1, 2024, the company detected unusual activity on its network, prompting immediate action to secure its systems. A specialized third-party cybersecurity firm was engaged to help investigate the incident and determine the extent of the breach. The investigation revealed that an unauthorized actor may have accessed and acquired certain files and data stored within Aiken Electric’s network, including customers’ names and financial information.

In response to the breach, Aiken Electric took several immediate steps to address the situation and mitigate the potential risks for those affected. The company conducted a thorough review of the compromised data to identify impacted individuals. While the exact details of the exposed information varied by person, Aiken Electric emphasized its commitment to transparency and notified affected customers to ensure they were informed about the breach.

To help protect customers against identity theft and misuse of their information, Aiken Electric is offering 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services. This service includes alerts whenever changes occur on an individual’s credit file. Additionally, the company is providing access to proactive fraud assistance through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, to support victims in the event of fraud. Aiken Electric also encourages customers to remain vigilant, review their financial accounts, and take additional steps to secure their personal information.

Aiken Electric is focused on enhancing the security of its systems and has implemented further monitoring tools to protect against future breaches. The company is dedicated to maintaining the privacy of its customers’ information and has made representatives available for 90 days to assist those affected by the incident. Aiken Electric’s prompt and proactive response reflects its commitment to safeguarding customer data and providing resources to prevent potential misuse of personal information.
