The renowned cultural institution, the Hong Kong Ballet, has reported a data breach stemming from a ransomware attack on its computer systems, making it the third well-established organization in the city to be targeted in the past two months.
Furthermore, the attack allowed intruders to gain access to personal user details and internal information. While the institution is diligently working to address the issue, it has not received any ransom demands or threats of data leakage so far. The organization is collaborating with external cybersecurity experts to assess the extent of the breach and has notified relevant authorities.
Additionally, this incident underscores the increasing threat of cyberattacks against reputable entities in Hong Kong. Recently, hackers demanded a ransom of HK$2.35 million (US$300,500) after infiltrating Cyberport’s computers and stealing substantial data, including personal information of staff. The Consumer Council also fell victim to hackers, compromising the personal data of staff and thousands of monthly subscribers.
These attacks highlight the importance of cybersecurity measures, such as regularly changing passwords and monitoring financial statements, to protect sensitive information. The police have received a report regarding the suspected hacking incident and classified it as a “miscellaneous incident.”
