Preparing for Quantum Challenges

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), National Security Agency (NSA), and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have collaboratively published a joint factsheet titled “Quantum-Readiness: Migration to Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC)” on August 21, 2023. This initiative aims to inform organizations, particularly those involved in Critical Infrastructure, about the potential impacts of quantum capabilities on cybersecurity. The factsheet highlights the importance of early planning to transition to post-quantum cryptographic standards by creating Quantum-Readiness Roadmaps.

In their joint publication, CISA, NSA, and NIST emphasize the need for organizations to review the factsheet and take proactive steps towards quantum readiness. They urge organizations to develop quantum-readiness roadmaps, conduct inventories of their cryptographic systems, apply risk assessments and analysis to identify vulnerabilities, and engage with vendors to ensure the adoption of secure post-quantum cryptographic standards.

To further support organizations in their quantum security efforts, CISA provides information and resources through its Post-Quantum Cryptography Initiative. This initiative offers valuable insights and guidelines to aid organizations in preparing for the challenges posed by quantum capabilities and transitioning to more resilient cryptographic standards.

The release of this joint factsheet underscores the collective efforts of CISA, NSA, and NIST in promoting quantum readiness and enhancing cybersecurity practices to safeguard critical infrastructure and sensitive data in the face of evolving threats and technological advancements.
