Hacktivist Group Linked to 750 DDoS Attacks

Mysterious Team Bangladesh, a prominent hacktivist group, has been identified as the orchestrator of a string of over 750 distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and 78 website defacements since June 2022.

Driven by religious and political motives, the group predominantly targets logistics, government, and financial sector organizations in India and Israel, with additional countries like Australia, Senegal, and the Netherlands falling prey to their campaigns. The group’s activities are marked by unauthorized access to web servers and administrative panels, possibly achieved through exploiting known security vulnerabilities or weak passwords.

The origin of Mysterious Team Bangladesh is suggested by its name, hinting at a Bangladeshi connection. With a dedicated online presence via platforms like Telegram, Twitter, and LinkedIn, the group actively promotes their “Operation Israel,” advocating for Palestine.

In a backdrop of rising cyber threats, details of the hacktivist group’s activities came to light in late 2022, particularly after a December attack on India’s Central Board of Higher Education (CBHE), leading to the exposure of sensitive government data.

This resurgence of hacktivism globally is perhaps fueled by ongoing geopolitical conflicts, where hacktivists adopt innovative approaches to gain recognition and, potentially, profit from their actions.

Meanwhile, a related development involves a pro-Russian hacktivist collective, NoName057(16), linked to disruptive DDoS attacks on Spanish and Italian websites. Notably, these hackers conduct comprehensive reconnaissance before launching attacks, focusing on high-impact areas of target websites. This trend underlines the evolving tactics of hacktivist groups in today’s cyber landscape.
