Maritime IT Security has compiled a comprehensive database of over 160 cyber incidents in the maritime sector, including ships, ports, and other facilities worldwide. The database aims to raise awareness of the relevance and vulnerabilities of cybersecurity in the maritime industry.

By collecting and analyzing this information, the research group at NHL Stenden University plans to enhance industry understanding and facilitate further research and simulations in this critical area.

The database goes beyond just documenting incidents on ships and includes incidents that have occurred in ports and other maritime facilities. Its purpose is to provide a comprehensive overview of cyber threats faced by the maritime industry and to serve as a valuable resource for future investigations and more accurate simulations. The research group hopes that this database will contribute to a safer maritime environment by helping the Global Maritime Transportation System (GMTS) prepare for the increasing number and impact of cyber threats.

Peter Mulder, director of the ICT & Creative Technologies academy at NHL Stenden, emphasizes that the database aims to create a safer world for the maritime industry. The public availability of the database raises awareness of cyber incidents in the sector and enables further research by the university’s research group, led by Stephen McCombie. Additionally, the database will be utilized to develop realistic and relevant simulations of maritime cyber incidents, enabling companies, organizations, and ports to enhance their preparedness and response strategies.

Furthermore, the research group plans to utilize the Maritime Cyber Incidents Database (MCAD) to produce reports and research papers that highlight trends and provide detailed analysis of specific subsets of the collected data.

This analysis will offer valuable insights into the nature and impact of cyber incidents in the maritime sector. The ultimate goal is to foster a better understanding of cybersecurity risks in the maritime industry and to facilitate the development of effective measures to mitigate and respond to these threats.
