Maine officials have announced that Nucor Corporation, based in Charlotte, contacted them regarding a cyberattack that has affected thousands of individuals. The Office of the Maine Attorney General stated that the attack, which took place between May 26 and June 1, 2023, compromised the data of approximately 8,824 individuals.
Two residents of Maine have been affected, and it has been mentioned that North Carolina residents are also impacted, although the total number is not yet known.
Furthermore, according to attorney Suzanne Gainey from Moore & Van Allen PLLC, Nucor was one of several companies caught up in a widely publicized breach. Gainey explained that an unknown individual exploited a software vulnerability during the attack, resulting in unauthorized access to data.
The breach was reported by Nucor on Monday, June 3, and the company promptly implemented a patch and initiated an investigation into the incident.
At the same time, in response to the breach, Nucor is taking measures to support the affected individuals. The company is providing them with 24 months of Equifax credit monitoring, which includes identity theft protection.
Nucor, known as North America’s most diversified producer of steel and steel products, employs over 800 people in North Carolina. The incident underscores the importance of cybersecurity measures and prompt response to mitigate the impact of such breaches.
