Roblox’s AI Safety Tools Spark Teen Concerns

Roblox has recently rolled out a comprehensive suite of safety and privacy updates specifically designed for its teenage users, a move that comes amidst increasing regulatory pressure and legal challenges regarding online child safety. Central to these updates is the introduction of an AI-driven age estimation system and the “Trusted Connections” feature, which aims to facilitate safer interactions. To utilize “Trusted Connections,” users aged 13 and older will now be required to undergo video-based age verification through a third-party provider, Persona, by submitting a video selfie. While Roblox emphasizes that it does not retain raw data and Persona deletes it within 30 days, this new biometric data collection from minors has sparked privacy discussions, highlighting concerns about surveillance and the broader implications of such systems on digital identity.

The timing of these updates is significant, closely following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to allow age verification laws to stand, with multiple states subsequently enacting similar legislation.

These laws, initially focused on restricting minors’ access to adult content, are now pushing platforms to extend such standards to other areas, including social interactions, as exemplified by Roblox’s new features. The “Trusted Connections” feature is designed to keep teens within the platform by encouraging connections with peers they know in real life, thereby aiming to reduce the migration of conversations to less moderated external apps like Discord or WhatsApp. However, critics argue that while this is a step in the right direction, it may not be a complete solution, as online harms can still occur within “trusted” circles.

In addition to the age verification and “Trusted Connections” feature, Roblox is also expanding its parental tools and teen privacy settings.

New functionalities include a “Do Not Disturb” mode, customizable online status, and insights into screen time and controls. These updates seek to balance teenage autonomy with parental oversight, providing parents with the ability to view time spent, friend lists, and experiences. However, there’s a risk that such heightened surveillance could lead some teens to create secondary or hidden accounts, a common response among youth who feel overly monitored, raising questions about the appropriate level of parental oversight for adolescents in their online independence.

These enhanced safety measures are a direct response to intensifying pressure on Roblox, which has recently faced lawsuits from families alleging negligence in preventing grooming and exploitation on the platform. Several states, including Florida, have initiated inquiries into Roblox’s content moderation systems and age verification policies, with Florida’s Attorney General issuing a subpoena for detailed records of the company’s safety practices. While Roblox consistently asserts its commitment to child safety through investments in moderation and machine learning tools, these legal and regulatory challenges underscore broader concerns about whether platform governance is evolving rapidly enough to counter real-world online threats effectively.

Ultimately, Roblox’s new safety initiatives reflect a broader industry trend toward reevaluating online safety for children and teens, with other major platforms like Reddit and Google also adjusting their age verification systems. While such features, particularly age estimation, may help platforms meet regulatory requirements, their true success will be measured by their ability to prevent harm, rather than merely documenting intent. The ongoing debate revolves around whether these updates will meaningfully reduce risk or primarily serve as technical safeguards that shift the responsibility for online safety from the platform to the user.
