UK Needs More Cyber Advisors For Small Firms

The United Kingdom’s leading cybersecurity agency has called for individuals and companies to join its Cyber Advisor scheme. This program was launched by the National Cyber Security Centre, also known as the NCSC, almost two years ago. However, according to the program’s lead, there are still not nearly enough expert advisors to go around for everyone.

The program lead, Emma W, stated in a blog post that the scheme’s current growth is not fast enough. She sought to play up the many different business benefits of getting involved with the important government program. The assessment to become a Cyber Advisor emphasizes skills that are not often tested by any other organizations.

It aims to ensure that expert cybersecurity advice is available locally to every one of the country’s 5.5 million SMEs.

The popular Cyber Advisor government program is very closely linked to the well-known Cyber Essentials security scheme. The Cyber Essentials program is also intended to improve baseline security for all of the many UK organizations. In fact, the first iteration of the Cyber Advisor program focused on helping many different clients implement five controls. These are best practices like using a firewall and keeping software and all of their various devices up to date.

Certified Cyber Advisors will have a clear advantage over competitors, having demonstrated their competence to an NCSC-approved standard.

Unfortunately, like the Cyber Advisor program, the Cyber Essentials scheme is also suffering from a general lack of interest. There has been very low take-up from British companies, which has been a significant and persistent ongoing problem. Although Cyber Essentials recently surpassed the ten thousand milestone for its accreditations for the very first time in history. The program’s lead stated that fewer than one in every one hundred British businesses have currently signed up.
