Spanish Consumer Group Faces Cyberattack

On May 8, 2025, Università Roma Tre in Italy faced a significant cyberattack, disrupting the university’s IT infrastructure. This attack rendered the university’s websites inaccessible, causing an immediate operational halt. The university detected the attack early and initiated recovery procedures in collaboration with national cybersecurity authorities and law enforcement agencies, including the Italian National Cybersecurity Agency and Postal Police. By May 9, the university had determined the extent of the breach and began efforts to restore critical services.

The university’s technical staff worked overnight to assess the damage and prioritize recovery tasks.

Efforts were focused on restoring vital systems, such as accounting, electronic document management, student services, and research management tools. These services were essential for the university’s daily administrative operations, and the restoration process aimed to minimize disruptions to students and staff. Access to student services (GOMP) was restored by the evening of May 9, allowing students and faculty to resume their activities.

The specific details of the attack, such as the type of data exposed or the number of affected individuals, remain undisclosed. However, the university has emphasized its ongoing commitment to resolving the situation and providing updates to the public. The institution apologized for the inconvenience caused by the disruption and assured that technical teams were working around the clock to restore the remaining services.

The recovery process continued through May 10 and 11, with a goal to fully restore operations by May 12.

While the investigation continues, the university is focusing on restoring normalcy and ensuring that all essential services are functional for students, faculty, and staff. The cooperation between the university’s IT department and national cybersecurity teams has been crucial in addressing the breach quickly. Further communications will be released regarding the progress and any additional findings from the investigation.
