Cyberattack Targets Tepotzotlán Facebook

Masimo Cyberattack Disrupts Manufacturing

On Monday morning, the official Facebook page of the Tepotzotlán City Hall in Mexico’s State of Mexico was hacked. Authorities confirmed that the page had been accessed by an unauthorized party, marking a cyberattack. The hackers replaced the page’s profile photo with the Guy Fawkes mask, an iconic symbol of the Anonymous hacker group. The cover photo was also altered, featuring the mask alongside a person wearing a red hoodie with “Thrasher” written on it.

In addition to the visual changes, a story was posted on the page showcasing the Guy Fawkes mask and the name of the municipality. The municipal authorities immediately filed a report with the Cyber Police and contacted Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook. The city is working with cybersecurity experts to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. The authorities advised the public not to engage with posts made during this period.

The Facebook page changes have already attracted significant attention, with over 250 reactions and 20 comments from users.

Tepotzotlán’s municipal authorities urged the media and the public to stay informed via their official website. At this time, there is no clear explanation for the cyberattack or who was behind it.

The page remained in a compromised state as of the latest updates.

Earlier this year, Tepotzotlán’s mayor, María de los Ángeles Zuppa Villegas, requested an indefinite leave of absence for personal reasons. Juventino Lozano, the second city councilor, was appointed as interim mayor by local law. This attack on the city’s social media has added another layer of complexity to the ongoing changes in municipal leadership. The situation remains under investigation, and authorities are focused on recovering the compromised account.
