Converse University, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina, recently reported a significant data breach that potentially compromised sensitive personal information. The breach was discovered on November 11, 2024, when the university detected unusual activity on its network. As a result, Converse immediately initiated a thorough investigation to determine the extent of the incident and whether any data had been accessed or stolen. The university confirmed that sensitive personal information belonging to students, alumni, and employees may have been exposed during the breach.

Through its investigation, Converse University confirmed that a portion of its network was breached, allowing unauthorized individuals to access and possibly copy personal information.

The exact details of the data compromised have not been fully disclosed by the university. However, based on state reporting guidelines, this personal information could include names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license or state identification card numbers, and financial account details, such as credit or debit card numbers combined with security codes or passwords.

These types of sensitive data could potentially be used to commit identity theft or fraud.

In response to the breach, Converse University began notifying the affected individuals on or around March 19, 2025. The breach notifications provided specific details about the types of information potentially exposed and offered guidance on how individuals could protect themselves. In addition, the university is providing affected individuals with complimentary credit monitoring services for 12 months, which is meant to help mitigate any potential financial damage caused by the breach.

Founded in 1889, Converse University is a private institution located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Originally a women’s college, it became co-ed in the fall of 2020. The university currently offers over 50 undergraduate degrees and 30 doctoral programs, serving almost 2,000 students. Converse University competes in a variety of sports as the Valkyries, with a range of women’s, men’s, and co-ed athletic teams.
