Hackers Steal $2 Million from Mexican JMAPA

On March 18, a significant cyberattack targeted the Junta Municipal de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado (JMAPA) in San Felipe, Guanajuato Mexico, leading to the theft of over $2 Million. Suspicious activities were flagged by Banorte, which noted 16 unauthorized transactions in JMAPA’s accounts. Following the breach, the municipality immediately reported the incident to the Fiscalía General de Justicia, calling for a thorough investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.

The municipal government has pledged full support for the investigation, with a focus on tracking down the stolen funds. To demonstrate their commitment to transparency, the government assured that all actions will be in line with the law and proper procedures.

In response, the municipal council decided to dismiss the JMAPA’s entire board, though no evidence has yet connected them to the attack.

The municipality emphasized that the integrity of the investigation was paramount and vowed to ensure that those responsible would be held accountable. The local government stressed that this case involved public funds and should not go unpunished. This breach is reminiscent of a similar attack that occurred in October 2023 in Cuerámaro, where nearly 8 million pesos were stolen through a cyberattack.

As the investigation moves forward, authorities are working to determine if any previous members of JMAPA’s leadership are linked to the hack. With cybersecurity being a growing concern in Mexico, this incident highlights the importance of protecting sensitive financial information and preventing future attacks. Local officials are committed to upholding trust with the public and ensuring that the perpetrators face justice.
