Rivers Casino Philadelphia Data Incident

March 14, 2025

in Incidents

Rivers Casino Philadelphia recently experienced a significant data breach, affecting multiple customers from Pittsburgh. Some customers were surprised to receive breach notification letters, despite never having visited the Philadelphia casino. The letters stated that on February 16, 2025, Rivers Casino discovered that unauthorized access to its systems may have compromised sensitive personal data, including dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license numbers. This breach has raised concerns among customers, especially those from Pittsburgh who had no direct connection to the Philadelphia location.

According to Rivers Casino Philadelphia, once the breach was identified, the casino immediately took action to secure the affected systems.

The casino launched a thorough investigation into the incident to determine the extent of the unauthorized access. The breach involved files stored on the casino’s servers, which included sensitive patron information from both Rivers Casino Philadelphia and its Pittsburgh location. In response, Rivers Casino began mailing notification letters to individuals whose personal data was believed to be at risk due to the breach.

In response to questions from Pittsburgh’s Action News 4, Rivers Casino explained that the breach occurred on their Philadelphia systems.

It involved files containing patron data from both their Philadelphia and Pittsburgh locations. This overlap has caused confusion among Pittsburgh residents who had not visited the Philadelphia casino. Rivers clarified that some Pittsburgh customers’ information may have been compromised because data from both locations was stored on the same system. This clarification helped to explain why individuals in Pittsburgh, who never visited the Philadelphia casino, were still impacted by the breach.

While Rivers Casino has not provided specific numbers regarding how many customers were affected, they confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. The casino emphasized that they are taking the necessary steps to secure their systems and prevent further breaches. Customers who received notification letters have been advised to monitor their accounts for suspicious activity. At this stage, the casino is continuing to investigate the  breach, and it has not disclosed additional details, including how the unauthorized access occurred or the full scope of the data compromise. Customers are being urged to take precautions against potential identity theft.
