Google has launched a new security feature called Identity Check for Android devices, designed to protect sensitive settings with biometric authentication when users are outside of trusted locations. The feature ensures that certain actions, such as accessing saved passwords, changing screen locks, or turning off theft protection, require explicit biometric verification. This move aims to add an extra layer of security, especially when devices are used in potentially unsafe environments, reducing the risk of unauthorized access to sensitive resources.
Identity Check is currently available on Google Pixel phones running Android 15 and selected Samsung Galaxy devices with One UI 7.
The feature can be activated by navigating through the Settings menu under Theft Protection. Once enabled, users will be required to authenticate their identity using biometrics for key functions like viewing trusted places, managing Google Accounts, or performing factory resets, thereby preventing unauthorized individuals from making crucial changes to the device settings.
This development is part of Google’s broader initiative to secure devices against theft and unauthorized access. Alongside Identity Check, Google has introduced features like Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock. These measures are designed to help users maintain control of their devices and sensitive data even if their phone is lost or stolen, ensuring that only authorized users can access the device’s critical features.
In addition to these new features, Google has also been focusing on strengthening its security measures for Google Accounts. The company has rolled out enhanced protection across its accounts to prevent unauthorized access, adding another layer of security for users. As part of its ongoing efforts, Google is working with industry experts to improve mobile device security and has extended the AI-powered Theft Detection Lock to all Android devices running Android 10 and later, improving protections worldwide.
