UK Government Launches Digital Wallet App

The UK government has announced the upcoming launch of the GOV.UK Wallet app, a digital solution that will allow citizens to securely store and manage government-issued documents on their smartphones. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the way official records are stored and accessed, reducing reliance on physical documents. The wallet, which will be available on both Android and iOS devices later this year, will initially support veteran cards for former military personnel, followed by a pilot for mobile driver’s licenses in 2025. The government’s ultimate goal is to ensure that all paper or card credentials offered by UK services will have a digital alternative by 2027, although traditional physical versions will still be available.

The app will leverage smartphone security features such as facial recognition to enhance the protection of personal data, allowing users to access their government credentials safely and immediately.

This move aims to address the challenges of losing or misplacing physical documents, such as driver’s licenses, while also offering users a more convenient way to manage official records. Citizens will be able to store important documents digitally and access them as needed without having to wait for physical versions to arrive in the mail.

In addition to supporting driver’s licenses and veteran cards, the GOV.UK Wallet will be used to facilitate processes like verifying eligibility for welfare benefits and proving age for age-restricted purchases in stores. Currently, individuals in the UK are required to present physical identity documents when purchasing alcohol or entering age-restricted venues, which can lead to the risk of these documents being lost or stolen. The app will help mitigate these risks while offering enhanced privacy and control over personal data for UK citizens.

The launch of the GOV.UK Wallet is part of a broader strategy to digitize government services. A new GOV.UK app is also set to launch in summer 2025, enabling users to complete tasks such as canceling stolen passports and applying for welfare benefits. Additionally, the UK government plans to introduce an AI-powered chatbot, co-developed with OpenAI, to provide users with quick answers to their questions and assist with government services. The GOV.UK Wallet and app represent a significant step toward making government services more efficient, accessible, and secure.
