NewsBank Data Breach Exposes Sensitive Data

NewsBank, an information provider based in Naples, Florida, recently reported a data breach that potentially exposed sensitive personal identifiable information. The breach was first detected on July 1, 2024, when the company noticed suspicious activity within its network. Following this, NewsBank launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the nature of the incident. It was confirmed that unauthorized access to personal data occurred between June 20, 2024, and July 1, 2024, with the information potentially being viewed or acquired by a third party.

The breach involved the exposure of various types of sensitive personal data

The breach involved the exposure of various types of sensitive personal data, including names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account information, and payment card details. NewsBank conducted a thorough review to determine which specific individuals were affected by the breach. The company also worked to understand the full scope of the data that had been compromised during the attack, taking steps to secure and assess the impact on its systems.

In response to the breach, NewsBank began mailing notification letters to the affected individuals on January 16, 2025. The letters provided a detailed list of the sensitive information that may have been exposed. To mitigate any potential risks, NewsBank is offering those impacted by the breach 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services. This initiative is aimed at helping affected individuals monitor their financial and personal information to detect any potential misuse.

Founded in 1972, NewsBank provides access to current and archived information from thousands of newspapers, blogs, business journals, government documents, and other publications. The company serves a wide range of institutions, including public libraries, schools, universities, and government organizations. Despite the breach, NewsBank continues to serve its clients, while also taking necessary steps to prevent future incidents and protect the sensitive data it holds.
