Dover Motion Reports Data Breach Incident

Dover Motion, a motion solution manufacturer based in Boxborough, Massachusetts, reported a data breach to the Attorney General of Maine, which involved the potential exposure of sensitive personal and health information. The breach occurred between January 25, 2023, and November 6, 2023, following unusual activity within its network. In October and November 2023, Dover Motion detected the presence of two separate unauthorized third parties on its network, prompting the company to launch an immediate investigation into the breach’s scope. The investigation revealed that personal information, including protected health information, may have been accessed by unauthorized individuals during this period.

The compromised data includes various forms of personal information, such as names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, birth certificate numbers, financial information (e.g., account numbers, credit card details), and health insurance information. Dover Motion undertook a comprehensive review of the affected data to assess the full extent of the breach. This review, which concluded on September 3, 2024, confirmed that sensitive personal information from several individuals was impacted, though the precise details varied from person to person.

In response to the breach, Dover Motion began mailing notification letters to affected individuals on October 3, 2024. The letters provided specific details about the compromised information and offered complimentary credit monitoring services for 24 months to those affected. The company also advised impacted individuals on steps they can take to protect themselves from identity theft, including monitoring their financial accounts, placing fraud alerts on their credit reports, and taking advantage of free credit reports. These measures were aimed at minimizing the risk of further harm to affected individuals.

Dover Motion, founded in 1963, specializes in providing motion solutions for life sciences, diagnostics, and industrial applications. The company, which is a subsidiary of Fortive, a global technology firm based in Washington, has shipped over 22,000 motion systems to Fortune 500 companies. Despite the data breach, Dover Motion remains committed to protecting its customers’ personal information. The company has worked with forensic experts to address the breach, strengthen its security measures, and notify federal law enforcement. Dover Motion has also enhanced its security monitoring systems to prevent similar incidents in the future.
