Cyberhaven Chrome Extension Suffers Attack

On December 24, 2024, Cyberhaven became the victim of a sophisticated targeted attack. The breach occurred when an attacker gained unauthorized access to a Cyberhaven employee’s account, which was then used to upload a malicious version of the Cyberhaven Chrome extension (version 24.10.4) to the Chrome Web Store. The extension was available for download until it was discovered and removed by the company’s internal security team on December 25, 2024. The malicious version of the extension posed a serious threat to users, as it could exfiltrate sensitive information, including authenticated sessions and cookies, to an attacker-controlled domain.

The attack was detected by Cyberhaven’s security team late on December 25, 2024, and immediate action was taken to remove the malicious extension within 60 minutes. However, the attack remained active between 1:32 AM UTC and 2:50 AM UTC on December 25, 2024, during which time sensitive data from affected users could have been stolen. This included user credentials and potentially unauthorized access to their accounts, putting customers at significant risk. It is important to note that the attack only impacted Chrome users who installed or updated the compromised extension during this brief window.

In response, Cyberhaven has advised affected users to take several actions to secure their accounts and data. Users are urged to verify that they have updated their Chrome extension to version 24.10.5 or newer, revoke and rotate any passwords not protected by FIDOv2, and review logs for potential malicious activity. Additionally, users should revoke and rotate all API tokens. Importantly, versions of the extension hosted on other platforms, such as Firefox and Edge, were unaffected by the attack.

Cyberhaven is fully committed to transparency in addressing the incident, keeping its customers informed, and working with federal law enforcement and cybersecurity experts from Mandiant to investigate the breach. The company has reassured its customers that it is taking all necessary steps to ensure the security of its products moving forward. As Cyberhaven continues to investigate the situation, it remains dedicated to regaining the trust of its users by offering ongoing support and updates.
