Smeg Battles Cyber Attack on Operations

Smeg, the multinational appliance manufacturer headquartered in Guastalla, Italy, experienced a suspected hacker attack that disrupted its computer systems on September 27, 2024. The incident affected critical software managing production, logistics, human resources, and accounting processes. To prevent further damage or loss of sensitive data, the company temporarily locked its systems. Investigations are underway to determine the cause and scope of the cyber intrusion.

Hundreds of Smeg employees were unable to continue their work due to the system failure and were sent home as a precautionary measure. Efforts are focused on restoring operations securely and efficiently. Smeg issued a statement reassuring stakeholders that the situation is under control and all necessary measures to protect information integrity have been implemented. Technicians are actively working to resume normal functionality as soon as possible.

This is not Smeg’s first encounter with cyber threats. Six years ago, the company faced a targeted cyber attack on its next-generation appliances in the United Kingdom. Although the incident affected devices using computer applications, there was no loss or dissemination of personal or financial data. Investigations at the time were conducted by the UK’s National Crime Agency, which worked closely with Smeg to address the breach.

The recent incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of even established companies to cyber threats. Smeg’s swift response, including system lockdowns and communication efforts, reflects its commitment to safeguarding data and operations. As investigations continue, the company remains focused on restoring its systems and ensuring long-term cybersecurity resilience to prevent future disruptions.
