Wabash College Addresses Privacy Incident

Wabash College recently informed individuals about a privacy incident involving their personal information. On May 31, 2024, the college received an email from an unauthorized individual claiming to be a whistleblower for a vendor previously engaged by Wabash. The email included an attachment containing sensitive personal information and was sent to both Wabash employees and unidentified third parties. Upon investigation, it was determined that the data referenced in the attachment related to a May 2023 event previously disclosed by Wabash.

The college clarified that this incident did not stem from any compromise of its internal systems. However, the email’s contents suggested that certain personal information, including names and other identifiable details, may have been exposed. Wabash immediately launched an investigation to understand the extent of the exposure and to identify the affected individuals. This incident highlighted potential risks associated with vendor-related data management practices.

To mitigate potential harm, Wabash is offering affected individuals complimentary access to credit monitoring and identity protection services through Experian. These services are designed to help monitor for unauthorized activity and protect against identity theft. The college provided instructions on how to enroll in these services, emphasizing that recipients must complete the enrollment themselves. Wabash also recommended that individuals stay vigilant by regularly reviewing account statements and monitoring credit reports for suspicious activity.

Wabash reiterated its commitment to safeguarding personal information and acknowledged the seriousness of the incident. By providing resources and proactive guidance, the college aims to minimize any potential risks to affected individuals. Additionally, Wabash has reassured recipients of its dedication to improving security measures and preventing similar incidents in the future. Those impacted are encouraged to take advantage of the offered services and remain alert to potential misuse of their information.
