Cross Catholic Outreach Reports Data Breach

Cross Catholic Outreach, a nonprofit religious organization headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, reported a data breach to the Attorney General of Maine. The incident occurred between April 14 and April 17, 2024, when the organization identified suspicious activity in its computer network. Following the discovery, Cross Catholic Outreach launched an investigation to determine the scope and nature of the breach, focusing on the potentially exposed data within its systems.

The investigation revealed that an unauthorized individual may have accessed and obtained sensitive personal information stored in the organization’s systems. The compromised data varies by individual but includes names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and financial account details. Cross Catholic Outreach conducted a comprehensive review to identify the affected individuals and the specific information impacted by the breach.

On September 19, 2024, Cross Catholic Outreach began sending data breach notification letters to those affected by the incident. These letters informed recipients about the types of data potentially exposed and offered guidance on protecting themselves against identity theft. Additionally, the organization provided complimentary credit monitoring services to help mitigate the risks associated with the breach.

Founded in 2001, Cross Catholic Outreach partners with bishops, priests, religious leaders, and lay workers to deliver humanitarian aid to impoverished communities in over 30 countries. The organization has provided more than $4 billion in aid worldwide, addressing needs such as food, water, housing, education, and medical care. Cross Catholic Outreach is committed to maintaining trust with its supporters and is taking steps to strengthen its security measures in response to this incident.
