NSW Cuts Cyber Jobs Despite Rising Threats

The Australian government has unveiled a major initiative with an investment of $11.1 million in the Small Business Cyber Resilience Service. This new service is designed to strengthen the cyber defenses of small enterprises across the country. It offers tailored one-on-one support to help businesses improve their cyber resilience and recover from cyber incidents. The service is part of a broader effort under the 2023–2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy, which aims to fortify Australia’s digital landscape. Scheduled to be rolled out by the end of 2024, this initiative highlights the government’s commitment to bolstering the cybersecurity of small businesses.

In addition to the Small Business Cyber Resilience Service, the Australian government is allocating over $60 million to enhance small business cyber and digital capabilities. Among the key programs receiving funding is the Cyber Wardens program, which will receive $23.4 million. This program aims to provide small businesses with free online training in essential cyber safety practices to protect against digital threats. The government is also launching a $7.2 million voluntary cyber health check program, which will offer businesses a free, personalized assessment of their cybersecurity maturity, helping them understand and address vulnerabilities.

Further investments include $18.6 million allocated to the Digital Solutions program, which supports small businesses in adopting digital tools to capitalize on online opportunities. These initiatives aim to foster a stronger, more resilient business sector that is better equipped to handle the increasing risk of cyberattacks. Minister for Cyber Security, Tony Burke MP, emphasized that the government is committed to enhancing national cyber resilience, stating that small businesses are essential in achieving the goal of becoming a world leader in cybersecurity by 2030.

Minister for Small Business, Julie Collins MP, also underscored the importance of these initiatives. She highlighted the devastating impact of cybercrimes on small businesses, noting that the average cost of a cyber incident is around $46,000. With the new support programs, the Australian government seeks to help small businesses navigate the digital landscape while keeping them safe from cyber threats. This effort is part of a broader Small Business Statement, which outlines over $640 million in targeted support for small businesses to ease pressures, foster growth, and level the playing field.
