Georgia Kidney Association Reports Breach

The Georgia Kidney Association (GKA) has recently notified individuals about a security incident that may have impacted their personal information. On May 6, 2024, an unauthorized individual gained access to GKA’s password-protected area and stole a safe containing sensitive data. Following the incident, GKA promptly initiated an investigation and alerted law enforcement. As a result of the investigation, GKA determined that certain personal information, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, health insurance information, and financial account details, may have been accessed without authorization. The specifics of the information impacted vary by individual, but GKA has taken steps to protect those affected.

To mitigate potential risks to affected individuals, GKA is providing free access to credit monitoring and fraud protection services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company. These services include a 24-month period of credit monitoring, which will alert individuals of any changes or updates to their credit files in real-time. GKA is also offering proactive fraud assistance to help individuals navigate any potential issues related to identity theft or fraud. The organization urges those affected to take advantage of these services as a precautionary measure, even though no confirmed misuse of personal data has been reported.

GKA is committed to ensuring the privacy and security of the information it manages. While the incident is still under investigation, GKA has emphasized that it is working diligently with law enforcement and taking appropriate actions to prevent similar events in the future. Individuals have been encouraged to remain vigilant and monitor their financial accounts and credit reports for any signs of unusual activity, and to report any suspicious events to the relevant institutions promptly. Additionally, GKA has provided detailed steps on how to activate the free credit monitoring service and other actions individuals can take to protect themselves from potential misuse of their personal information.

For individuals with additional concerns or questions, GKA has provided a dedicated assistance line to address inquiries about the event. The organization remains focused on resolving the issue and safeguarding the privacy of its clients. They continue to offer resources and guidance to individuals who may be affected by the incident and encourage those impacted to remain proactive in protecting their personal information. GKA’s priority remains the security of the sensitive data in its care, and they are committed to making necessary improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future.
