Citrix Workspace App Fixes Privilege Flaws

September 10, 2024

Citrix has released security updates for its Citrix Workspace app for Windows to address two significant vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities could allow a cyber threat actor to exploit them to gain control over an affected system. The flaws are present in multiple versions of the app, including the current release (CR) and long-term service release (LTSR) versions prior to specific update versions. The security updates were introduced to prevent potential attacks where low-privileged users could escalate their privileges to SYSTEM-level access, posing a significant risk to the affected systems.

The first vulnerability, identified as CVE-2024-7889, involves improper control of a resource through its lifetime, which allows a low-privileged user to gain SYSTEM privileges with local access. It has been assigned a CVSS v4.0 base score of 7.0, indicating a high level of severity. The second vulnerability, CVE-2024-7890, is related to improper privilege management, enabling a low-privileged user to escalate privileges to SYSTEM level. This vulnerability carries a CVSS v4.0 base score of 5.4, highlighting a medium to high-risk level for systems running the affected versions of the app.

Citrix advises customers to immediately upgrade to the latest fixed versions of the Citrix Workspace app for Windows to mitigate these vulnerabilities. The security updates are available for Citrix Workspace app for Windows versions 2405 and later for the current release (CR), and 2402 CU1 LTSR or later versions for long-term service releases (LTSR). Additionally, users of version 2203.1 LTSR CU6 Hotfix 3 are also advised to install the latest fixes to ensure their systems are protected against these privilege escalation vulnerabilities.

Citrix is strongly urging all users to apply the updates as soon as possible, as these vulnerabilities could lead to severe security breaches if exploited. Users who have not yet updated to the recommended versions should do so promptly to protect their systems from potential attacks. The company has provided detailed information and instructions for users on how to download and apply the necessary updates to safeguard their Citrix Workspace app installations.
