Skyland Grain Reports Data Breach Impact

Skyland Grain, a grain farmers’ co-op based in Ulysses, Kansas, reported a data breach to the Massachusetts Attorney General that may have exposed sensitive personal information of individuals within its systems. The breach was discovered on February 23, 2024, after the company detected unauthorized activity in its computer network. In response, Skyland Grain immediately initiated an investigation to determine the extent of the breach and identify the affected data. The investigation revealed that unauthorized access occurred between February 22 and February 23, 2024, potentially exposing personal details.

The company’s review of the affected data, which was completed on August 13, 2024, found that the exposed information included names and Social Security numbers of impacted individuals. Skyland Grain worked diligently to identify the specific individuals whose information may have been compromised. This review was critical in understanding the scope of the breach and ensuring proper notification to the affected parties.

To mitigate the potential harm caused by the breach, Skyland Grain began sending data breach notification letters to affected individuals on September 6, 2024. In the notification, the company informed individuals about the specific types of exposed information and provided them with access to 24 months of free credit monitoring services. This service aims to help affected individuals protect themselves from identity theft and fraud following the breach.

Skyland Grain has been a cornerstone of the grain industry since its founding in 1915, with operations spanning across Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Texas. The co-op operates grain elevators and offers a range of services, including grain marketing, agronomy, fuel services, and financing options. Skyland Grain is committed to helping its customers safeguard their information and prevent any potential misuse following the incident.
