Air-e Hit by Sophisticated Ransomware Attack

On September 2, 2024, Air-e, a major energy company in Colombia, suffered a sophisticated ransomware attack that significantly disrupted its operations. The incident rendered key systems inaccessible, leaving customers unable to access essential services like online bill payments. The attack was detected after unusual network activity on August 30, escalating over the weekend and prompting immediate countermeasures. Air-e reported the breach to the Fiscalía General de la Nación and launched a comprehensive investigation to trace the perpetrators and secure its systems.

The attackers demonstrated exceptional skill, managing to bypass advanced security solutions from Kaspersky, a globally recognized cybersecurity provider. This raised concerns about the high level of sophistication employed. Air-e collaborated with cybersecurity experts to conduct a forensic analysis of the vulnerabilities exploited during the breach. These efforts focused on mitigating further damage, restoring compromised systems, and implementing robust safeguards against future attacks.

The breach disrupted customers’ daily lives, particularly those reliant on Air-e’s online payment system. Affected users expressed frustration over the lack of access to critical services. In response, Air-e maintained transparency, keeping users informed about the progress of recovery efforts while urging patience during the resolution process. Despite these efforts, the attack’s complexity prolonged the restoration of normal operations.

Adding to its challenges, Air-e faces a financial crisis that has destabilized its operations across Atlántico, Magdalena, and La Guajira. Mounting debts of $1.8 billion and soaring energy costs prompted the company to seek government intervention. Air-e’s legal representative highlighted the impact of market volatility and alleged profiteering by energy generators. The company emphasized the urgent need for government assistance to stabilize operations and ensure uninterrupted service delivery to its millions of customers.
