On August 29, 2024, the Western Electrical Contractors Association, Inc. (WECA) officially notified the Attorney General of Maine about a data breach caused by a cyberattack that compromised sensitive consumer information. The incident was characterized by unauthorized access to the organization’s IT network, resulting in the exposure of various personal details belonging to approximately 35,290 individuals. This sensitive information includes names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, financial account information, payment card information, medical records, and health insurance details. In the wake of this breach, WECA initiated the process of sending data breach notification letters to all affected individuals to inform them about the incident and the potential risks involved.

Upon detecting unusual activity in its network, WECA promptly initiated an investigation to ascertain the nature and extent of the breach. The investigation revealed that unauthorized access to the network occurred between January 21 and January 22, 2024. During this period, the intruder may have copied files containing confidential consumer information. Following the incident, WECA took decisive action to review the compromised files, determining the specific data that had been leaked and the individuals impacted. By June 27, 2024, the investigation concluded, enabling the organization to assess the full scope of the breach.

In response to the breach, WECA implemented several measures aimed at protecting the sensitive information of its members and the public. The data breach notification letters, which were sent out on August 29, 2024, included details of what information was compromised for each affected individual. This effort demonstrates WECA’s commitment to transparency and consumer protection following a significant security incident. The organization has also made information regarding the breach available on its website to ensure that the public is informed about the situation.

Based in Mather, California, the Western Electrical Contractors Association, Inc. is a nonprofit entity dedicated to serving merit shop electrical contractors, their employees, and industry suppliers. With over 70 employees and an annual revenue of approximately $10 million, WECA offers various services, including training, workforce development, and advocacy for its members. As the organization moves forward, it remains focused on bolstering its security measures and maintaining the trust of its constituents in light of this unfortunate incident.
