Bank of Clarke recently experienced a data breach, as reported to the Attorney General of Maine. The incident involved suspicious activity in the bank’s email system, prompting an internal investigation. On June 17, 2024, it was discovered that an unauthorized actor may have accessed sensitive personal information within emails and attachments. The exact type of information exposed is not publicly detailed, but “personal information” may include names, Social Security numbers, account numbers, and other sensitive details.

Following the discovery, Bank of Clarke began reviewing the data to identify the affected individuals. The breach potentially exposed information such as credit and debit card numbers, passwords, and identification numbers. The investigation aimed to determine the full extent of the breach, with state reporting guidelines indicating what types of data might have been compromised. Despite the thorough investigation, the bank has not yet disclosed the full range of compromised information.

On August 23, 2024, the bank started notifying those impacted by the breach, sending data breach notification letters to residents of Maine. The bank also provided affected individuals with details of the specific types of information compromised and offered 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services. Bank of Clarke is actively working to support affected individuals by providing protective measures following the breach.

Bank of Clarke, headquartered in Berryville, Virginia, is a financial services company founded in 1881. The bank offers personal banking services, consumer loans, credit and debit cards, and mobile banking options across its 13 locations in Virginia. As a trusted partner in its communities, the breach marks a significant challenge for Bank of Clarke, as it continues to prioritize safeguarding customer data.
