Malaysia Boosts Cybersecurity with Data Unit

The Malaysian Digital Ministry is intensifying efforts to secure the nation’s digital landscape amid growing foreign investments from tech giants like Google and Microsoft. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has announced plans to form a dedicated data committee, which might become a data commission by March 2025. This initiative aims to address data safety concerns and underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining a secure cyber environment.

In a bid to develop robust cybersecurity measures, the Ministry is emphasizing a collaborative approach with industry stakeholders. Gobind highlighted the importance of incorporating industry perspectives into legislative processes to ensure comprehensive data protection and safety protocols. This collaborative approach aims to modernize cybersecurity practices in line with the increasing technological investments and developments.

A notable development is the partnership between Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) and Cybersecurity Malaysia (CSM) to enhance 5G network security. This collaboration will lead to the creation of a National 5G Cybersecurity Testing Centre, enabling industry players to identify vulnerabilities and ensure compliance with security standards. The establishment of this testing center reflects Malaysia’s commitment to safeguarding its 5G infrastructure and addressing potential security threats.

As Malaysia advances its 5G rollout, which has achieved a 43.6% adoption rate, concerns about pricing and infrastructure remain. Minister Gobind assured that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will address pricing issues while emphasizing the critical role of 5G in driving national progress. Malaysia’s proactive measures, including enhanced cybersecurity and industry collaboration, highlight its ambition to become a leading digital hub in Southeast Asia.
