Positron Broadcast Processor Auth Bypass

The ICS Advisory for the Positron Broadcast Signal Processor TRA7005, released on July 25, 2024, highlights a critical vulnerability identified as CVE-2024-7007. This vulnerability, which has been assigned a CVSS v4 score of 8.7, allows remote attackers to bypass authentication mechanisms using an alternate path or channel. The issue specifically affects version 1.20 of the Broadcast Signal Processor TRA7005, potentially enabling unauthorized access to protected areas of the application. The vulnerability arises from improper authentication validation that could be exploited by attackers to gain access without proper credentials.

The risk associated with this vulnerability is significant, as it enables attackers to bypass authentication and access sensitive areas of the application that are otherwise protected. This could lead to unauthorized access to critical functions or data within the Broadcast Signal Processor. The low attack complexity and the availability of public exploits further exacerbate the risk, making it crucial for affected users to take immediate action to mitigate potential threats.

Positron S.R.L, the vendor of the affected equipment, has not yet responded to requests from CISA for collaborative mitigation efforts. Users are advised to contact Positron customer support for guidance on addressing the vulnerability. In the meantime, CISA recommends several defensive measures to minimize the risk, such as reducing network exposure for control system devices, placing systems behind firewalls, and using secure methods like Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) for remote access.

Despite the severity of the vulnerability and the public availability of a proof of concept by researcher Gjoko Krstic, no specific exploitation targeting this issue has been reported. CISA continues to provide guidance on improving cybersecurity practices and encourages organizations to implement recommended strategies to defend against potential threats. Additional information and recommended practices can be found on CISA’s website, offering resources for mitigating such vulnerabilities effectively.
