EU Tech Commissioner Prioritizes Sovereignty

Henna Virkkunen, a former Finnish Member of the European Parliament (MEP), is set to lead Europe’s technological future as the new EU Tech Commissioner. Appointed to the position following the resignation of Thierry Bretton, Virkkunen brings a focus on boosting Europe’s innovation, cutting unnecessary regulations, and enhancing the EU’s technological sovereignty. This vision aligns with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s promise to place research and innovation at the heart of the EU’s economy during her second term. Virkkunen’s priority is to close the innovation gap with the U.S. and China, with a specific emphasis on digital technologies that can help boost prosperity, security, and overall societal well-being.

Virkkunen’s policy agenda centers around two core objectives: fostering innovation and securing Europe’s digital future. She recognizes the EU’s over-reliance on third countries for critical technologies and aims to increase investment in frontier technologies. Artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, semiconductors, and cloud technologies are at the forefront of her strategy. Specifically, Virkkunen advocates for doubling research and investment in microchips, positioning them as a key component of Europe’s path to achieving tech sovereignty.

A key focus of her plans is the development of AI and quantum technologies. Virkkunen has expressed her ambition to turn Europe into a global leader in developing trustworthy AI, while also calling for a coordinated EU action on quantum technologies. She believes these sectors are crucial for Europe’s future competitiveness, economic growth, and security. By investing heavily in research and creating a robust regulatory environment, she intends to secure Europe’s place at the cutting edge of technological advancement.

Virkkunen’s pro-business approach has been positively received by industry stakeholders. Leaders from organizations like DigitalEurope and the European Quantum Industry Consortium have praised her proposals, particularly her emphasis on innovation, security, and resilience. Industry leaders believe that under her leadership, the EU can empower businesses to innovate and expand across the single market, positioning Europe as a leader in the global tech economy. With her focus on building a secure and competitive digital ecosystem, Virkkunen’s leadership is seen as a strategic step toward securing Europe’s technological future.
