Snyk Acquires Probely to Bolster Security

Snyk, a prominent developer security company, has acquired Probely, a Portuguese provider of dynamic application security testing (DAST) services, to enhance its API security capabilities. As generative AI and AI-native applications continue to surge in adoption, the demand for robust API security has grown significantly. APIs, which are often overlooked in traditional security frameworks, have become a key area of focus for securing modern applications. This acquisition positions Snyk to meet the rising need for early-stage API testing within the software development lifecycle (SDLC), offering a comprehensive security approach that integrates seamlessly into continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) workflows.

Probely, founded in 2016 and co-led by Nuno Loureiro, who has extensive experience in application security, has built a reputation for offering tools with low false-positive rates and an intuitive interface. These capabilities align well with Snyk’s commitment to delivering developer-friendly solutions that prioritize usability and productivity. By integrating Probely’s tools into its platform, Snyk aims to provide dynamic vulnerability detection specifically tailored to APIs, addressing a critical gap in application security as companies scale their AI-driven models and rely heavily on API interactions.

A key advantage of the acquisition is the integration of static and dynamic security testing. Snyk’s approach to security emphasizes proactive vulnerability testing, and Probely’s modern DAST tools complement this by offering pre-production security testing that identifies vulnerabilities before applications are deployed. This early detection approach helps to mitigate security risks, especially in AI-native applications, where untested APIs can introduce significant vulnerabilities. By combining static analysis with dynamic testing, Snyk ensures that its solutions provide a reliable validation method to differentiate between real vulnerabilities and false positives, ensuring a more secure development process.

The acquisition of Probely is part of Snyk’s broader strategy to automate security across the SDLC and strengthen its position in the API security space. With the increasing reliance on APIs in AI-driven applications, ensuring comprehensive API security is critical for organizations to mitigate risks such as those identified in the OWASP Top 10 API vulnerabilities. As Snyk aims for a potential IPO in 2025, the integration of Probely’s capabilities will bolster its security offerings and drive future growth, positioning Snyk as a key player in securing modern software development environments. This acquisition also highlights the growing importance of API security in the face of emerging AI technologies and their associated risks.
