Cantey Hanger, a Texas-based law firm, reported a data breach to the Attorney General of Maine that may have compromised sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information. The incident was detected on February 22, 2024, when the firm discovered suspicious activity on its computer network. This prompted Cantey Hanger to launch a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the nature of the incident and to evaluate the extent of the potential breach. During this inquiry, it was revealed that an unauthorized third party may have accessed sensitive information within the firm’s systems.

The investigation conducted by Cantey Hanger uncovered that various types of personal information might have been viewed by the unauthorized individual. The data that could potentially be exposed includes names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, and financial information such as bank account details and payment card information. Additionally, medical and health insurance information was also identified as being at risk. This breadth of sensitive information underscores the severity of the breach and its implications for the individuals affected.

To address the situation, Cantey Hanger took proactive measures by beginning to notify impacted individuals on August 2, 2024. Each affected person received a data breach notification letter detailing the specific types of sensitive information that may have been compromised. In an effort to help mitigate the risks associated with identity theft and to ensure the safety of their clients, Cantey Hanger is providing those affected with 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services. This initiative is intended to assist individuals in monitoring their financial health and securing their personal information.

Cantey Hanger, founded in 1882, is a full-service law firm that provides legal representation across a wide range of practice areas, including banking, family law, and corporate restructuring. The firm is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, with three additional locations across the state and employs over 60 professionals. With a strong commitment to serving its clients, Cantey Hanger emphasizes transparency and communication during this challenging time, ensuring that its clients are informed and supported in the wake of the data breach.
