Valve Mandates Anti-Cheat Disclosure

Valve has implemented a new policy requiring game developers to disclose the use of kernel-level anti-cheat systems in games available on its Steam platform. This decision stems from growing concerns among players about the security risks associated with such software, which has privileged access to a computer’s kernel. Valve aims to enhance transparency for users by ensuring they are informed about any anti-cheat software installed alongside games, addressing requests from the community for clearer information on these systems.

The company’s new requirement mandates that developers indicate if their games install client-side kernel mode anti-cheat systems, with this information displayed prominently on the game’s storefront in the Steam Store. In addition to requiring disclosures for new game submissions, Valve plans to review existing titles and reach out to developers whose games may fall under this requirement.

This proactive approach aims to ensure that all developers comply with the new regulations and to mitigate potential security concerns. Valve’s initiative highlights the risks associated with kernel-level access, which has previously led to serious security breaches. For instance, past incidents have demonstrated that vulnerabilities in anti-cheat software could allow malicious attackers to execute remote code, compromising users’ systems.

By mandating disclosure of kernel-level software, Valve hopes to protect players from potential exploitation and build trust within the gaming community. Furthermore, the company is also emphasizing the importance of providing uninstall scripts that completely remove any files created or modified during the game’s installation. This measure is particularly critical for anti-cheat systems that may leave behind residual files, which could alter operating system kernel files.

By ensuring that players are fully informed about the software installed on their devices, Valve is taking significant steps towards enhancing user safety and reinforcing its commitment to responsible gaming practices in an ever-evolving industry.
